In this novel, Steinbeck illustrates that these mercy killings were done in a sense that helps the reader realize that they killed out of compassion for their soul. Lennie, who had an obsession with petting things, got himself into trouble when Curley’s wife showed up in the barn one day. Lennie, who had a child like mind, was feeling Curley’s wife’s hair when she started to get upset. This scared Lennie, who then panicked, accidentally killed her when he was trying to get her not to scream so he wouldn’t get into trouble. Lennie understood what he had done, but he felt like it was not any worse than when he killed the puppy. He then proceeded to the clearing near the pond where George had told him to hide if he ever got into trouble. After George finds out about what Lennie has done, he realized that no matter what he would be killed. George took action by finding Lennie first. George told Lennie about the farm while making him look across that pond so that he could get a quick and painless shot to Lennie’s skull. George did this out of compassion for Lennie. George thought it would be better if he killed him mercifully instead of Curley killing Lennie. Although George killed Lennie, he did it to protect Lennie from a slow death. Lennie didn’t deserve to die because he didn’t do it on purpose. Lennie didn’t have the brain compact to understand what he had
