Mercutio Is To Blame For The Deaths Of Romeo And Juliet

There is always someone to blame for all the mishaps that happen. This is never truer than in the tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare, a story of forbidden love. Within this play, there are two enemy families, the Capulets and the Montagues. Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, fall in love. Within this play, many people die. However, it is neither Romeo nor Juliet who is at fault for these deaths. The one who is responsible for this tragedy is Mercutio, Romeo’s friend and the Prince’s kinsman because he not only encouraged Romeo to go to a Capulet party but he also provoked Tybalt to fight him which started the long string of deaths.
There are many ways this tragedy could’ve been prevented. One of the best ways to prevent it is for Romeo to never attend the Capulet party. At first,

After not receiving a reply to his challenge, Tybalt went out to look for Romeo. He finds Benvolio, Mercutio, and Romeo, but is only greeted by Mercutio’s taunts. Mercutio wants him to fight him calling him a “king of cats” (Act 3 Scene 1 pg 119) and how he’ll take “... one of his nine lives (Act 3 Scene 1 pg 119).” Romeo interferes with their fighting by trying to,”’... beat down their weapons, (Act 3 Scene 1 pg 119)’” but this gets Mercutio killed. Though it may seem that it was Romeo’s fault, it was Mercutio’s fault, because it was he who openly insulted Tybalt and made him draw his sword. If Mercutio didn’t provoke Tybalt, they wouldn’t have fought. Romeo had no intention to fight and actually tried to flee the area, but after Mercutio’s death, Romeo had a reason to fight and this resulted in Tybalt’s death. These two deaths both would’ve been prevented if Mercutio didn’t provoke and taunt Tybalt. Mercutio is to blame because he was the one who initiated the fighting and started the long chain of
