The character of Mercutio, in the 1996 movie adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet”, was the one character that was the most intriguing. In the film Mercutio is introduced while wearing a skirt, heels, and red lipstick; which made his first impression the most striking compared to the other characters. At the beginning, Mercutio brought a bit of comedic relief to the film, as he distracted viewers from the heartbreak Romeo was going through with Rosaline. While Mercutio was flamboyant and entertaining, his character also served an essential purpose to the drama. After finding out that Romeo was already over Rosaline and had fallen in love with someone new, Mercutio gave off a sense of frustration. Romeo was a character that was aware of his feelings and loved easily, but Mercutio could not understand or relate to that aspect of Romeo at all. Mercutio was the foil of the drama as his traits contrasted with those of Romeo’s. Romeo was a hopeless romantic, but Mercutio doubted the love Romeo was so easily able to find.
