The terrestrial planet with the coldest surface temperature is Mercury. The surface of Mercury can reach the low temperature of -170 degrees Celsius on the side of the planet that is facing away from the sun. Mercury has a slow rotation because it is tidally coupled to the sun, thus a full day on Mercury is two Mercury years long. This keeps one side of the planet in the dark for a very long time relative to the Earth, meaning it has a longer period of time out of sunlight to reach these very low temperatures. In addition, Mercury has a very thin atmosphere so little to no heat is retained on the surface of the planet. So when half the planet is out of the sunlight, there is no blanket of atmosphere to keep that side of the planet warm in the
