My interest towards attending Mercer University’s Physician Assistant is largely due to the emphasis the University puts on service to humankind through service learning and integrating volunteering. Being a founding institution that ingrains service to humanity entirely into its culture and academics, there is no doubt that Mercer would provide me with an exceptional opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills of a Physician Assistant providing whole person care to members of the community. Having worked as an Emergency Medical Technician in an underserved community, Kewaunee, Wisconsin, for some time now, I thoroughly understand how important providing effective care to those in need really is. During my experience I witnessed the appalling living conditions that many patients were surrounded by and how difficult accessing healthcare service was for them, thus enforcing medical illnesses to be even more likely to occur among them. I have personally observed how appreciative and grateful many of the patients and the families of the patients were when …show more content…
Having grown up in a town where diversity is not very common and then attending a Jesuit University during my undergraduate years I have realized how important respect towards all religious groups is to me. Loyola University in its mission repeatedly mentions the idea of seeking God in all things and it is a home for all faiths and these are the same values Mercer University works towards achieving. I have grown and matured drastically during my undergraduate experience because of these values that Loyola has taught me and being given the opportunity to further my Physician Assistant Studies at Mercer University will give me opportunity to continue growing and maturing with the same values and ideas, or even help me develop a better understanding of spirituality and diversity from a different

Prior to 1965 educators and doctors alike- namely Eugene A. Stead- recognized a shortage of professions that would act as both an assistant and primary healthcare provider. Thus, “the PA profession was created to improve and expand healthcare,” using a curriculum Stead created based on the one used for fast-tracking doctors during WWII, (The History of the PA Profession). This profession requires a bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in PA sciences, as well as a minimum of three years’ medical work experience. A PA works under the authority of a physician or a doctor, meaning they are less likely to have to deal with lawsuits. The profession itself is very flexible with many fields and many opportunities for both part-time and full-time employment, (Cawley, Roderick, and Pedersen 15).…

I will be the type of provider that takes care of my patient’s physical and social needs by recognizing their social and psychology needs and make the appropriate referrals. Additionally, in order to further contribute to the mission of the program I want to advocate for future healthcare providers to practice in impoverished communities. Studies have shown that a majority of health care professionals currently in school may not have been exposed to community health or have had negative experiences. Through volunteer programs I want to educate future health providers about underserved populations that will hopefully result in future providers choosing to work in an underserved area during their career. The purpose of this program to support the mission to improve health and achieve health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce, and innovative programs.…

As an EMT, being exposed to various medical emergencies, I cherish the uniqueness of each patient encounter. Though some health emergencies are similar in terms of diagnosis and treatment, the circumstances and concerns of each patient differs and thus your care must be tailored to provide optimal treatment, which can ultimately mean the difference between a patient’s life and death. Giving my best care coupled with a positive, compassionate and comforting approach can mean so much to a patient as they go through one of the toughest times in their life. By aiding and treating different injuries and illnesses, I have come to appreciate and also be grateful for the little things I usually take for granted.
