He was born as a domesticated, civilized dog and had to become a ferocious killer if he wanted to live. Throughout the novel, Buck becomes less dog-like and more wolf-like. This helped him to adapt better into the wild. Along with spiritual change, Buck also endured physical change. He is able to eat almost anything and eat it faster than he did before. Buck also grew many more muscles than he already had. By physically adapting to his environment, Buck was able to hold a steady position of alpha dog in his group. At the beginning of the novel, we view Buck as a strong, but spoiled dog. He has everything he wants and needs and doesn’t have to work for much.
