I am writing to express my interest in the Academic Advisor position in the College Center for Advising Services that is posted on the Office of Human Resources website. Securing an advisement position in Rochester is my top priority, specifically at the University of Rochester. Therefore, I am elated to see that this position is open. I believe that the combination of my experience in academic support, coupled with my approach to advising, would complement the mission and the student-centered philosophy of your department. Throughout graduate school I have held two paid positions and three credit-bearing internships. My research assistantship at the Center for the Development of Human Services consisted of a collaborative project with faculty …show more content…
During this internship, I focused on three large projects. First, I analyzed a mixed-methods survey sent out to mentors and mentees to locate areas that the mentorship program could be improved. The most prominent theme that emerged from the data was that the mentors did not understand that mentorship has a life-cycle, and often times the first stage of the mentorship relationship is the most difficult. Mentors would give up on mentees because they could not get past the rough stage of building the relationship with their mentee. With this data, I crafted hand-outs and activities related to the mentorship life-cycle that were used during mentor training. Second, I developed activities for first year students and participated in a summer workshop series that was designed to help ease the transition into college. Lastly, I researched information about students on academic probation and was tasked with creating a new work booklet for students on probation. I created a document to facilitate self-reflection and to help the probation advisor locate the myriad of issues that land a student on probation. Upon completion, we worked with faculty to get their suggestions on the

At times, it will require much effort on my part, but the benefits of a successful mentorship far exceeds these small inconveniences. Mentees bring fresh ideas and perspective to the table. Being a mentor is part of a noble process that prepares mentees for their future endeavors. Mentoring is a process that is ultimately rewarding and fulfilling for both parties. And last, self-reflection will allow me to gauge how well my techniques are working.…

Increasingly, community-based internships (sometimes referred to as ‘fieldwork’) are the capstone to undergraduates’ professional preparation (Cleary et al., 1998). Rojas-Guyler et al. (2006) found 83% of undergraduate programs required some internship experience. Partnered with seasoned professionals in the community, internships enable students to apply their academic preparation to the real world. Internships enhance students’ classroom-based development and capacity to perform as professionals (Barnett, 1995; Lindsay, Hanks, Neiger & Barnes, 2000).…

Mentorship plays such an important role in all of our lives regardless of vocation and interests. Delving into history we see how many of the renowned innovators, actors, politicians, and business leaders were mentored during some stage of their lives. I can recall the names of a few mentor-mentee relationships I became aware of over time - Plato mentored by Socrates - David Letterman mentored by Peter Lassally - Warren Buffet mentored by Benjamin Graham – Steve Jobs mentored by Robert Friedland - Russell Crowe mentored by Tom Sharpin and Bill Gates mentored by Dr. Ed Roberts. Having participated in mentorship at both ends of the spectrum, I know firsthand about its benefits, which include maturity, focus, diligence, accountability and sustained…

In the Human Services field I am very passionate about working with people in the deaf culture. I am passionate about working with this population because I know American Sign Language and I feel a connection to the community. Learning ASL took a long time and allowed me to be engaged in many events in the deaf community. I believe people in this population are not given nearly as much attention or opportunities as they should be. The lack of equal access to education, jobs, and basic interactions that hearing people take for granted is not fair and puts this population at a disadvantage therefore making it important for people to want to work with this group of people.…

I got the opportunity to do my internship at Houston Methodist West Hospital. I have been working for Methodist for the past 4 years in our registration department and out of those four years, I have had the opportunity to work with 3 different management teams. Although, each of my management teams delivered different methods on how to properly register a patient under 7 min or less, our goal we have always strived for was keeping our patient satisfaction scores at a high. Our organization implemented a strategy called AIDET, (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explain, and Thank you) to make this process work effectively. As our patient were very impressed with our ICARE values, (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence)…

Every day people fall into their own norms. Throughout my first couple years of high school, I fell into my norm. I diligently attended classes, worked on assignments, and partook in extracurriculars. I remember being content with this schedule; I believed the information I learned in the classroom was all I needed to benefit my educational development. However, at the start of my junior year, I decided to challenge my norm and enroll in some college courses at a nearby community college.…

Being a peer mentor is not an easy task. It requires a great deal of awareness, hard work, and passion in order to facilitate the class to the best of your abilities. In turn, it is important to not take the job too seriously, and that is why my fellow peer mentors and I have developed a humor culture within the context of the class we are teaching. The humor culture helps us to work on, yet make light of the political correctness and inclusion we must constantly be practicing in our line of work. To start off, a peer mentor is a student who helps co-facilitate a one-credit topics course called Integrated Liberal Studies 138.…

By critically looking at my mentoring habits I hope to be more accessible to my mentees and to be a better planner of my meetings. Before training at the beginning of the semester, I thought mentoring was just about giving advice. I now know that it is way more than that. You do give advice but you also have to give tools to constructively help students.…

A peer mentor is defined as a person who uses their resources to support, encourage and inform someone. Going into this semester, I was unaware that I would be mentoring another student and thus doubted my abilities. Although I was excited to become a mentor, I questioned whether I would truly be able to make a difference in someone’s life. The difference that I wanted to make could be as simple as helping someone ace a test, but the news of mentoring threw me off track. Nonetheless, I gathered myself and tried to maintain a positive attitude.…

Have you had the experience of having a mentor or coach? Yes, I have had the experience of having a mentor or coach. One of my previous managers was a very good mentor to me, and she always gave me great advice. According to the textbook, “a coach is a peer or a manager who works with an employee to motivate him, help him develop skills, and provide reinforcement and feedback” (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gehart, and Wright, 2013, p.425).…

A significant outcome/concept that was discussed in the Environmental Health and Emergency Preparedness course/textbook is the National Response Framework Preparedness Cycle. This concept parallels with the Pillowcase Project because both share “the common goal of building response capability... [and to] ensure that readiness is maintained” (p.55). The National Response Framework Preparedness Cycle consists of Planning  Organizing, Training, and Equipping  Exercising  Evaluating and Improving  Capacity Building. In correlation to the Pillowcase Project, the course is taught in order to plan or prepare for an emergency by creating a first aid/supply kit.…

Introduction The coach’s role is to develop the coachee’s resourcefulness through skillful questioning, challenges, and support; not advising because when advice is given, the coach implies that he or she knows best and that the coachee does not (Rogers, 2012). Coaching requires a listening ear to ensure that the coachee is understood and is making decisions that will ultimately help accomplish the goals. During this final coaching session, my client and I will be working together to close the coaching sessions and then determine the next phase of our relationship Pre-Coaching Plan…

This is exactly the second report of my internship program. Even though this is just the second month, I have got so many priceless experience that I have never expected before.
