Mentorship Observation

Today, I really enjoyed the focus on talking and more of a natural interaction with the youth. I got to sit down and talk with Kamila for the second part of today's activities and I honestly really didn't want to leave. I didn't really know what to expect out of the youth or this experience, but I get very excited every time I have an opportunity to go there. Talking with Kamila really got me excited about the mentorship program because both her and Morgan asked me. I would really love to be able to come and hang out with them and get to know them more. While this is a hope of mine, I have never told any of them that I would do it because I don't want to get their hopes up. Honestly, I wish they had a volunteer opportunity where we could come in and hang out with the youth as a whole or in smaller groups to continue the relationships. I don't think I would be able to say yes to mentorship just because of my schedule and I wouldn't want to let them down. …show more content…
Talking with Amber I was able to see how false that stereotype is because she was talking about how her mom works three jobs and is barely able to meet ends meet. She said that because she (Amber) is in the correctional facility that the government took away some of her assistance because there is one less person living in the house. Specifically, she was upset because her mother's health insurance was reduced or taken away because she (Amber) wasn't living with her at the moment. It's hard to understand why the government gives and takes assistance away when most likely they will just have to give it back once Amber is out. I feel like this just makes Amber want to get out as quick and not take every opportunity to better her life because she knows that it is a strain on her

I believe that Santiago had many mentors including the sun, the alchemist, King Melchizedek, and, like Maggie said, the sheep. I believe that the sheep were mentors to Santiago because he learned that most things follow a pattern. His daily life depended on the sheep, and they depended on him. Santiago states, "... he realized that it could be the other way around: that it was he who had become accustomed to their schedule" (page 4).…

Our agency currently provides little in the way of leadership development outside of current leadership, supervisors, and managers. Current field personnel only receive training and education they personally seek out from external sources such as, undergraduate, and graduate degree programs; attending conferences with focus on leadership; research into leadership; applying for leadership education and positions; etc. The need for a mentoring program is basically due to two different groups we have within our organization: the ones with leadership skills and those without leadership skills. Since leadership is not directly related to clinical skills, the level and degree of expertise is not a high priority. These groups can be used for…

Rehearsing Your Personal Case Mentor ship As one of the options I brainstormed to address the delinquent behavior of my juvenile, I've come to believe that what most young people in the juvenile justice system needs is not services or professional assistance. Some do. Some are in the justice system because they cant stop their behavior because they have mental health problems, substance abuse problems and they need professional help to get past those barriers. But many are often suffering from severe cases of adolescence, and they need to be helped with that disorder. Learning responsibility, learning how to associate with others, learning how to make decisions, learning that there are risks in life and that there is no need…

Do you know what city contains the longest beach in Ohio? It is Mentor, Ohio, containing Headlands Beach that is approximately one mile long. I chose this city because I have lived in the area my entire life and enjoy the many fascinating attractions the city offers to the community. Not only do I appreciate the city but my entire family also lives in Mentor, and I would like to live near them. Although Mentor is a fantastic city, I wonder if problems with the population of Mentor will affect traffic or pollution and cause families to become distant because they don’t want to travel through a populated city?…

When transitioning to UGA as a freshman, I had tons of questions about the campus and things to do in Athens and didn’t know who to ask. I know I would have benefited from the Peer mentor program and wish it was available when I was a freshman. I want to be a peer mentor because I want to ease the often scary transition from high school to college for a new freshman. When I was a freshman, I spent most of my time either in class, at the dining hall, or in my dorm. I didn’t branch out because I didn’t know what else there was to do on weekends besides football games and I ended up going home most weekends.…

Out of the numerous experiences that have shaped my life, from intense political conversations to helping out the high school freshmen for my Peer Mentorship class, I feel the most influential experience in my life is when I began interning at a law clinic. Not only because it helped me determine my career path for my future, but also because it solidified my passion for wanting to help people, especially immigrants/asylum seekers who come from impoverished backgrounds or unfortunate circumstances. I currently intern at the University of Detroit Mercy George J. Some organizations have formal mentoring programs which seek to connect older people to younger people in need of friendship and guidance. But the majority of mentorship happens informally, and occurs when a more experienced community member adopts one or more younger persons who they meet through a church, club, volunteer organization or other means. As a foreign student attending the University of Wisconsin, Madison, I was lucky enough to have met an older woman through a local church that reached out to foreign students, inviting them to sponsored events. Her help was invaluable in guiding me through this period of study; our friendship lasted until her passing many years later. Of course, mentorship is not for everyone.…

Most instances of success in life do not come without proper planning beforehand. I often relate teachers to coaches because coaches have to create a plan of action. I originally thought that by just being there for someone you were a mentor. I now know through this program that mentoring involves giving both tools and advice to effectively help your mentee. The relationship with a mentee is somewhat different than a relationship between friends. There is a sort of bond that occurs from helping the student but the student holds you to higher standards than a friend would. I am excited about mentoring next semester because I want to hone my mentoring skills even further be able to help my mentees in a more effective way.…
