Many of my students praised my teaching and mentoring style. I would teach them, let them come up with plans and execute them. If they were bad or did not pass the common sense test, I would let them know. From there I would guide them on how to do it right and let them re-execute. Just as Rick did for me.…

Mentors will have the satisfaction of teaching a new staff member the traditions and history of our school and new staff will be given the opportunity to transition to our school. Mentors will feel that their experiences are valued and new teachers will feel that they are being welcomed into the family. In the article “Beyond Solo Teaching”, Feiman-Nemser discuss some of the challenges a first-year teacher may face and the importance of assigning a mentor teacher. I agree with Feiman-Nemser’s view of incorporating and fostering a professional learning community in the mentor process. As stated in the article, an occasional check-in does not provide a first-year teacher with the feedback or growth required to be successful in…

Until this year, I never really saw the importance of having a mentor, and I think this is because I rejected the idea of being completely vulnerable with another person. Although, this section in MacDonald’s book really brought into perspective that as a leader without someone wiser than myself, I will not be “sharpened” or in other words, I will not grow in my faith the way I wish to. A mentor who is not afraid to be honest, and call me out on my wrongs, but also recognize my strengths is important. Specifically, I find my mentor quick to call me out when she feels I am not being fully honest (which is a lot), and I need that. I have began to think how hard life would be without her by my side, and I thank God everyday for bringing her into my life.…

Do you know what city contains the longest beach in Ohio? It is Mentor, Ohio, containing Headlands Beach that is approximately one mile long. I chose this city because I have lived in the area my entire life and enjoy the many fascinating attractions the city offers to the community. Not only do I appreciate the city but my entire family also lives in Mentor, and I would like to live near them. Although Mentor is a fantastic city, I wonder if problems with the population of Mentor will affect traffic or pollution and cause families to become distant because they don’t want to travel through a populated city?…

Since starting high school, my interest in classroom learning had dropped quite significantly. I felt like grades were just a game, and that I should be out in the world learning things I deemed "practical life skills." My senior year I was able to mentor in a classroom of fourth graders for one period, ever other day. I took the class thinking it would be an easy and fun way to spend an hour an a half.…

Growing up in New York City has been a wonderful and challenging experience. This city offers so many opportunities to its residents, but tapping into those resources proves to be a challenge all its own. When everything seems both immensely important and incredibly useless, a mentor or person willing to guide one through the academic process can make the difference between excellence, mediocrity, and failure. I am who I am because there were teachers, no matter how few, willing to help me connect the dots and come to realizations that I otherwise would not have come to. I want to help create that same opportunity for other students who may feel lost or confused by everything vying for their energy and attention.…

I will always remember the teachers and coaches that had a positive impact on my life, whether it was in second grade or my senior year of high school. A peer mentor is defined as a person who uses their resources to support, encourage and inform someone. Going into this semester, I was unaware that I would be mentoring another student and thus doubted my abilities. Although I was excited to become a mentor, I questioned whether I would truly be able to make a difference in someone’s life. The difference that I wanted to make could be as simple as helping someone ace a test, but the news of mentoring threw me off track. Nonetheless, I gathered myself and tried to maintain a positive attitude.…
