Being a critic for such a vulnerable community is difficult because ethically the critic has to separate himself or herself from being influenced by the misconceptions of the foster youth community that society has created. One misconception that society has for foster youth that are placed in relative foster homes is that they do not experience the same emotional turmoil as other foster youth that are placed in foster homes with non-relatives. By including quotes from the poems in the book about the conversation between the author and his parents on the topic of love, it is clear how complex and how impactful the opinions of biological parents have on their child regardless of him being raised by his uncle. As a former foster youth, I have confronted several emotional factors in my life, causing me to rethink the type of person who I am. When I emancipated from my group home, I had no desire to enroll in college or look for any type of occupation, but just to return to my family and visit my old friends. It was not until one person who convinced me to rethink my decisions before it was too late, his name was Esteban Lara, a former worker at my previous group home. I have developed a close attachment toward him, seeing him as a mentor, seeing he was one of the few people I could talk to. He did not want me to throw away my life in the streets, so I could just hangout with a couple of friends and get trouble with the police department.…

Rehearsing Your Personal Case Mentor ship As one of the options I brainstormed to address the delinquent behavior of my juvenile, I've come to believe that what most young people in the juvenile justice system needs is not services or professional assistance. Some do. Some are in the justice system because they cant stop their behavior because they have mental health problems, substance abuse problems and they need professional help to get past those barriers. But many are often suffering from severe cases of adolescence, and they need to be helped with that disorder. Learning responsibility, learning how to associate with others, learning how to make decisions, learning that there are risks in life and that there is no need…

In 2014 a child entered foster care every two minutes (Statistics, 2014). Out of the four-hundred thousand children in foster care, twenty percent of those are teenagers between the ages of sixteen and twenty (Helping Youth, 2013). Out of that twenty percent, one in five teenagers will essentially emancipate or sign them out of care if they are not adopted before the age of eighteen leaving many jobless, homeless, throwing away education, and with very little independent living skills (Helping Youth, 2013). As well, once a teen is no longer in foster care any services they may have been receiving are completely stopped; in addition, they are also left without health insurance. This is particularly alarming since statistically speaking, foster…

Abstract One of the questions that has been asked countless times is why most are if not all extracurricular activities at our middle and high schools are being taken away. After school programs have been very strategic in helping young people find their talent, career choices and so much more (Durlak, 2007). Football, basketball, band and dance are just a few of the activities that kids have to choose from when it comes to participating in their school activities. According to the San Diego Police department and also a few other Police departments, they have reported that the number of kids that participate in extracurricular activities are less likely to commit a crime (Afterschool Alliance, 2007).…

I did not understand my limitations until presenting the guide to some of the patients leaving when they revealed they have never even called to make their own appointment before; how would they navigate with this guide? After hearing some of these concerns, I added a resource on the guide that had computer and phone access spots for them to be able to use.…
