Mentoring: Overcoming A Language Barrier At School

Decent Essays
I would not have made as far as I have done in my academic career without mentoring. I had to overcome a language barrier at school because at home, my parents spoke Spanish because they are Mexican immigrants. Fortunately I found a mentor who was passionate about teaching me english and made learning enjoyable. Since then I have enjoyed learning and wanted to help others be successful in school.
I have since then offered my help and advice to my fellow classmates, friends, and family. However, it was not until my sophomore year in highschool that I manage to set aside a spot into my busy schedule just for mentoring. I noticed that several of my friends were struggling with their class work and I decided that peer mentoring might be the solution.

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

“A leader has to watch every word he or she says and quickly learns that you can’t go through life without a few critics, some well deserved” (pg. 5), this quote as some of the beginning words from MacDonald truly shows that a leader has responsibilities to uphold to. I found it interesting that he showed these responsibilities are not only external, but internal as well. Many do not realize the internal battles that leaders in ministry go through, and in order for leaders to handle a situation in a mature manner; they must uphold to the responsibilities of character they are expected to maintain. There are many internal and external expectations of leaders that are specified in Building Below the Waterline, but only some really stood out to me as factors that I would practice more than others in my leadership positions.…

However, when it comes to my professional carrier, I have a friend who I can consider as a mentor. She gives me a lot of advices and guides me in her personal area of expertise.…

Dr. Coy, Thanks for the response. I believe mentoring goes hand in hand with having strong ESL programs. ESL programs help immigrant students gain the literacy skills they need to succeed academically and survive in their new culture (Callahan, Wilkinson, Muller, & Frisco, 2009). Although ESL teachers are there to teach immigrant students English, they can also serve as mentors. In my initial thread, I mentioned that parent apathy is one of the risk factors for immigrant students who are on the verge of dropping out of school.…

Imagine a parent desperately trying to help their child with their reading comprehension homework. The child keeps asking the parent what the word summarize means, but the parent simply does not know how to answer the question. If the child received the definition of summarize then he or she would have completed the homework assignment successfully. However, since the child did not get an answer from the parent, he or she ended up handing in a blank homework sheet. The next day at school, the teacher sees that the child has not completed his or her homework, and misinterprets it as the child not understanding reading comprehension.…

For a school as rich in diversity like Lexington, it would be difficult to keep everyone on the same page due to language barriers. However, Ms. Deuel did an excellent job in her ELL classroom on practicing democracy and giving every one of her students a fair chance at succeeding. She used many types of resources to give her students a fair advantage at learning according to their learning styles. For those who were technologically savvy, she had them practice their warm ups on the laptops. For the kinesthetic learners, she had them get up and play a game where they could interact with each other.…

By critically looking at my mentoring habits I hope to be more accessible to my mentees and to be a better planner of my meetings. Learning a second language (L2), after a first has already been acquired, may be a different process from learning a first language (L1); it involves acquisition of a new set of arbitrary forms to re-represent an already established set of forms from L1 (Midgley, Holcomb, & Grainger, 2009). Semantic and translation priming studies utilizing vocabulary from two languages offer an informative perspective into these processing systems of second language in the mind of a bilingual or a second language learner. The findings in this type of research provide important insights to help implement teaching methods and facilitate learning as more students are expected to learn a second language as part of their required curriculum, and as more children…

When one thinks of the multicultural classroom the person may think of language barriers. Will the students understand English? Will the teacher understand the language of the student? These questions often lead into thinking about second language acquisition and English Learners. This is important to the multicultural classroom because the teacher should not only be patient with English Learners, who are acquiring English as their second language, but also should be culturally aware of the students they are teaching.…
