Mentor Teacher Reflection

Over the course of twelve weeks I was able to observe many methods that were implemented by my mentor teacher. For assessment, her main method was unit test, but she did incorporate projects into her methods for assessment. During my time at the school I was able to see two different projects and the beginning of another one. It was easy for me to tell that my mentor teacher was trying to change some aspects of her assessment style, but when you have ben teacher for twenty plus years it’s hard to come up with different techniques. When I asked her about her different styles of assessment she stated that this year she wanted to try different things, thing that she haven’t really done in the past just to see what will work in the future and what …show more content…
I will have to say that I am impressed because first off, she as the teacher sees a need for change and she is working really hard to give the students what they need to help them become more successful. Secondly the assessment style that she is currently implementing seem to be working well for both her and the students. I believe that by what I have seen within the class that her most effective methods are the projects over the written exam. I am not say that the written exams are ineffective, but it just seems that the students enjoy the project assignments that they have had so far. And when a student enjoys what he/she is doing then the teacher will get the purest and best quality of work from the student. As far as written exams there are a lot of complications that can occur that will skew the pureness and the accuracy of the test which can lead to an ill assessment of student …show more content…
My future plans maybe the results of my own preference as a student. I believe that you will learn more about you student and what they have learned through project assessment assignments. Through projects you let your students have control of the product that is produce but with guidelines. As the teacher, you can see if the student was able to understand and retain the content was taught and you will also see how the student interpreted the content as well. I personally want to stay away from written exams because I don’t want to see how well my student can study or how well they can cram, I want know their thoughts, their beliefs, and their feelings. I know that projects are a lot of work for both the student and myself as the teacher but that is not a problem. I am not going to say that I will never give a written exam as a part of my curriculum but I know that there will not be a test after every unit. Overall my plan is to use a combination of different assessment methods to assess my

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

The Power to Win must come from Within Before I entered the school I looked it up on a webpage Zillow.com. I know that my mom and my sister would use it a lot. Especially when they were looking into moving houses or buying a home. Tulip Grove Elementary school had a rating of 8 out of 10. For me that tells me that the school is considered as a school that is above average.…

My job as a chemistry teaching assistant also required a combination of personal and practical skills and ability to be assertive without arrogance. Each week the students had to submit a heavy load of assignments, and keeping track of grading alone required a developed level in time efficiency, accountability, and organizing skills. I had to be knowledgeable enough about the subject to comprise worksheet, practice exams, review sessions, and grade fairly. I also had to know how to communicate that knowledge to the students: proving feedback on misunderstood requirements, clearly answering any questions they had about the material. I knew an accelerated chemistry course can be overwhelming, I always encouraged and motivated the students when…

For example will assessment be initial/pre course, formative, summative or based on recognised prior learning. The assessor will need to decide the methods or activities to be used for assessment such as observations, performance evidence, discussion or witness/learner statement. How knowledge and understanding is going to be assessed also needs careful thought and could include tests, multiple choice questions, written assignment/task, a reflective journal, verbal questioning or naturally occurring evidence, all of which need to be fit for purpose and relate to the learner’s specific needs. Further considerations for assessment planning are to determine who will be assessing the learning/learner and how progress will be monitored and reviewed following feedback. 3.2 Evaluate the benefits of using a holistic approach to…

As everyone talks about how amazing the Technology Management Program is at UCSB, I could not agree more and now fully understand what they mean and thoroughly enjoy these classes. I am excited to be able to apply our TMP 111 speaker’s ideas and advice to my day to day life in the present as well as influencing my decisions and choices for the rest of my life. The thing I enjoyed most about the speakers were their ability to relate back to us college students, and provide a realistic example that what we are doing right now directly impacts our future. Three principles I am taking away with me from this class correlate to motivation; because I have a small idea of what career path I want to follow but not a great amount of confidence I can get…

I am doing my internship hours at Lincoln Circle Center. It is a great experience for me because I could learn from my mentor/ teacher Cecelia Pace. Together we set learning goals and plan learning experiences by integrating knowledge of each child’s temperament interest, gender, culture, and learning approaches. At Lincoln Circle Center I am learning how to support children’s development by integrating learning experiences related to all domains through the curriculum and their environment. In addition, with the help of the mentor teacher I will develop and plan, creative and innovative lesson plans according to the interest and ability of the students.…

When I began to think about what assessments I would choose for this assignment I first thought about selecting a variety of assessment forms. I wanted to choose both formative and summative assessments but found this more difficult than I had originally thought. Selecting summative assessments seemed easy but choosing a formative assessment was much more difficult. As I began to think more about a formative assessment that I would include, I found several models that would work. My next task was selecting assessments that demonstrated a wide variety of assessment skills as well as a variety of lessons taught.…

Thus, if teachers are focused on materials that will be on student’s standardized exams alone. Students are only being introduced to limited and core competencies that will not hold their interest or challenge them to take on self-regulated learning. Also, students will only be restricted to practicing similar test as the standardized exams and won’t have the opportunity to monitor their progress effectively. As we’ve learned from Jerome Burner, it is important to incorporate a variety of assessments to track student’s progress. Such as oral evaluations, projects, presentations, essays, observations, and…

Mentoring The start of mentoring has gone really well, I really enjoy working with all of the kids and helping them learn. All together mentoring is basically what I expected it to be: helping the kids with their math and reading, and helping the teacher with papers and such. Working with the kids is going really well, I normally have a certain set of kids that I have been working with throughout the year so far because the teacher believes that they need a bit more study time to keep up with the rest of the class. Therefore, considering I keep working with the same kids I’m starting remember all their names and getting along with them very well.…

On Wednesday, October 7 at 3p.m., I met with my advisor; Summer Balcer to discuss my future college career plans. We discussed which courses would be best for me to take next semester and then put them into my planner on my account. I also decided during this meeting to take US history 1302 over the winter mini session. In addition to the winter mini session, I also am planning on taking Math 1314 during the first summer session and then possibly Government 2306 for the second summer session. I decided to take my math class over the summer because I tend to do better in my math classes when I only have to focus on that class.…

A peer mentor is defined as a person who uses their resources to support, encourage and inform someone. Going into this semester, I was unaware that I would be mentoring another student and thus doubted my abilities. Although I was excited to become a mentor, I questioned whether I would truly be able to make a difference in someone’s life. The difference that I wanted to make could be as simple as helping someone ace a test, but the news of mentoring threw me off track. Nonetheless, I gathered myself and tried to maintain a positive attitude.…

This semester I learned many techniques and lessons regarding how to become a better mentor. Some of the major lessons I learned were related to how I communicated and led others. I learned that I am a leader in the exploration stage and a considerate communicator. Learning these facts about myself help me cater my style of communicating to different mentees and how to recognize how other people see me in the leadership role of mentor. Learning how to find out about how you communicate and about the leadership model in class gave me tools to work on myself as well as tools for me to pass on to my mentees.…

Reflection on Book Title “The Leader, The Teacher & You” I share the same sentiment with the author that “Walk the ground!” is essential for a leader to earn respect from the ground. Walking the ground also requires social competency skills such as being able to “communicate to influence” and having “interpersonal effectiveness”. In future, I will apply this principle of “Walk the ground!” by constantly engaging my superiors, peers and subordinates for their guidance and opinions through cohesion and feedback sessions on how various tasks can be done more effectively and efficiently. Through these sessions, I will seek to understand their concerns and challenges in their area of work.…
