Mentor Role

Decent Essays
I am very interested in the wellbeing, student support or regional mentor roles. I am flexible, I am not a qualified counsellor. However, I do have a wide range of skills and knowledge in that particular line of work. I would very much like to be able to put these skills to use in a working environment.

By formalizing our relationship as candidate/mentor I have gained a lot of insight into Cameron’s professional and personal areas of interest. We have found that we have surprising similarities and working styles. It has helped me to understand his goals and be able to advocate for him with senior management and plan for his development on projects that I am managing. The added benefit of working on the same team allows me to help him on a day to day basis and be able to track the work he is doing and help motivate him to track and log the various design stages for his professional registration. Having a professional and committed mentoring programme implemented at AECOM has helped to formalize the process and provide a drive that helps…

At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…

An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

Do you know what city contains the longest beach in Ohio? It is Mentor, Ohio, containing Headlands Beach that is approximately one mile long. I chose this city because I have lived in the area my entire life and enjoy the many fascinating attractions the city offers to the community. Not only do I appreciate the city but my entire family also lives in Mentor, and I would like to live near them. Although Mentor is a fantastic city, I wonder if problems with the population of Mentor will affect traffic or pollution and cause families to become distant because they don’t want to travel through a populated city?…

Several contenders challenge these arguments by stating that it is not realistic to think that a mentoring program can support all of a child's needs, especially if the child initially comes in with programmatic issues and circumstances. They furthermore state that these at-risk youth need more counseling and therapeutic intervention from trained professionals opposed to a typical volunteer (Thompson and Kelly-Vance (2001). For example, a program targeting juvenile offenders indicate mentoring alone may not combat the issue and change the behaviors. Repeated offenders were three times more likely to be arrested than those who had no chronic issues. The findings also suggest one-on-one mentoring does not seem to be more beneficial over group…

The role of mentors in the activities of an adolescent, whether enriching or corruptive, is pivotal to how they see the world and interact within it. If it is an enriching mentor that is supportive, nurturing and protective, this person is contributing to the social capital and feeding the need to feel wanted. It is easier to emulate a person you admire and trust then it is the opposite. In the case of mentors who lead adolescents towards vices, there are more forceful interactions then the later. The relationship would be almost one sided, the adolescent trying to fill that need to be wanted, and the mentor taking advantage of their lack of knowledge of the world due to their youth.…

I wish to thank you for the opportunity to apply and be considered for the mentor program. It has been a huge goal of mine to be a part of the program since I first learned about it in the sixth grade. I would like to ask you to reconsider the decision to not include me in the program. As you may know, sixth grade was extremely difficult for me. The adjustment from elementary to middle school was much more challenging than I could have ever imagined, and I know that my grades, attendance, and emotional health showed that great trouble I was having in a very obvious way.…

Some organizations have formal mentoring programs which seek to connect older people to younger people in need of friendship and guidance. But the majority of mentorship happens informally, and occurs when a more experienced community member adopts one or more younger persons who they meet through a church, club, volunteer organization or other means. As a foreign student attending the University of Wisconsin, Madison, I was lucky enough to have met an older woman through a local church that reached out to foreign students, inviting them to sponsored events. Her help was invaluable in guiding me through this period of study; our friendship lasted until her passing many years later. Of course, mentorship is not for everyone.…

Mentoring The start of mentoring has gone really well, I really enjoy working with all of the kids and helping them learn. All together mentoring is basically what I expected it to be: helping the kids with their math and reading, and helping the teacher with papers and such. Working with the kids is going really well, I normally have a certain set of kids that I have been working with throughout the year so far because the teacher believes that they need a bit more study time to keep up with the rest of the class. Therefore, considering I keep working with the same kids I’m starting remember all their names and getting along with them very well.…

Most instances of success in life do not come without proper planning beforehand. I often relate teachers to coaches because coaches have to create a plan of action. I myself am a coach; I coach the Level One gymnastics team at Noma’s School of Gymnastics in Anniston, Alabama. Each day I have a plan to follow so that my gymnasts receive the preparation they need in order to be successful at their meets. Teachers must also create plans that guide students in their learning.…
