By formalizing our relationship as candidate/mentor I have gained a lot of insight into Cameron’s professional and personal areas of interest. We have found that we have surprising similarities and working styles. It has helped me to understand his goals and be able to advocate for him with senior management and plan for his development on projects that I am managing. At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…
Do you know what city contains the longest beach in Ohio? It is Mentor, Ohio, containing Headlands Beach that is approximately one mile long. I chose this city because I have lived in the area my entire life and enjoy the many fascinating attractions the city offers to the community. Not only do I appreciate the city but my entire family also lives in Mentor, and I would like to live near them. The role of mentors in the activities of an adolescent, whether enriching or corruptive, is pivotal to how they see the world and interact within it. If it is an enriching mentor that is supportive, nurturing and protective, this person is contributing to the social capital and feeding the need to feel wanted. It is easier to emulate a person you admire and trust then it is the opposite. In the case of mentors who lead adolescents towards vices, there are more forceful interactions then the later. Some organizations have formal mentoring programs which seek to connect older people to younger people in need of friendship and guidance. But the majority of mentorship happens informally, and occurs when a more experienced community member adopts one or more younger persons who they meet through a church, club, volunteer organization or other means. As a foreign student attending the University of Wisconsin, Madison, I was lucky enough to have met an older woman through a local church that reached out to foreign students, inviting them to sponsored events. Mentoring The start of mentoring has gone really well, I really enjoy working with all of the kids and helping them learn. All together mentoring is basically what I expected it to be: helping the kids with their math and reading, and helping the teacher with papers and such.
