I was recently selected by my supervisor to act as a mentor for the new hire class. I would be responsible in guiding the new hires during their first days taking calls in the customer service center. I decided to accept the position because I knew that doing so would be a stepping-stone for my advancement within the company. After completing my assignment period, I learned that I thoroughly enjoyed being an instructor to the new hires, even though it was for only a short period of time. During my assignment I also had the opportunity to collaborate with the other mentors about training techniques and areas of opportunity. In doing so, I also learned that I work best in groups where the other members are knowledgeable, honest, and willing to

Out of the numerous experiences that have shaped my life, from intense political conversations to helping out the high school freshmen for my Peer Mentorship class, I feel the most influential experience in my life is when I began interning at a law clinic. Not only because it helped me determine my career path for my future, but also because it solidified my passion for wanting to help people, especially immigrants/asylum seekers who come from impoverished backgrounds or unfortunate circumstances. I currently intern at the University of Detroit Mercy George J. Asher Immigration Law Clinic, where I have the opportunity to shadow an attorney and work on cases for individuals who come from destitute households or were brought to the United States…

My job as a chemistry teaching assistant also required a combination of personal and practical skills and ability to be assertive without arrogance. Each week the students had to submit a heavy load of assignments, and keeping track of grading alone required a developed level in time efficiency, accountability, and organizing skills. I had to be knowledgeable enough about the subject to comprise worksheet, practice exams, review sessions, and grade fairly. I also had to know how to communicate that knowledge to the students: proving feedback on misunderstood requirements, clearly answering any questions they had about the material. I knew an accelerated chemistry course can be overwhelming, I always encouraged and motivated the students when…

In my time at Union thus far I have been able to use my unique academic background to enable me to grow and prosper. I originally started out at a middle/high school that was very atypical in that the school did not provide students with grades, nor use exams as a way of evaluating a student’s abilities. The school also did not participate in any form of a standardized test such as the New York State Regents. Instead, I was heavily evaluated by teachers where they would highlight my strengths, identify areas of improvement, and suggest how I was doing in the course. This school was called the Lehman Alternative Community School and emphasized heavy student involvement in the decisions the school made and had strengths at instilling critical…

I would like to say I excelled in self-management, there were times when I would fail to meet with my personal project mentor weekly but I did always keep her updated with emails or talking about it in the little bits of time I would catch her and talk and walk. I also kept up with dates in my process journal and times; there was never a time I wrote in my physical process journal that I did not record the time and the date at which I was doing these tasks or completing that research. If I were to make a timeline of all the research I have completed from the beginning to the end of my personal project, I would be able to mark the information completely honestly because I did keep track of dates. The only aspect for self-management I will I had done better is the talking to my mentor.…
