Topic #1: My experience with Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Cloud, MN has impacted my life in various ways. I had the opportunity to use my leadership skills and be a positive role model and true friend to a child in need. The child I mentor has impacted me a tremendous amount. Prior to us meeting, she was unable to trust anyone. Recently, it became apparent that my involvement with my “little sister” created a bond between us. By listening to her story, being non-judgmental, and showing her that I truly care, her journey of acceptance began. She realized she was no longer a victim and that she mattered. This experience, has allowed me to show that I am not afraid to go out of my way to help someone. The child I mentor now believes she can be successful and accomplish anything she puts her mind to.

Topic #3: During my last season of volleyball, I faced multiple challenges. Despite the time and effort put into each practice, I was overlooked. My coach ignored me, was less than thrilled with my performance, and still did not play me. Although being benched was devastating, I chose to remain positive and keep trying. Determined

I currently volunteer at Country Manor Nursing Home, St. Cloud Hospital, and St. Francis Xavier Church. I have always felt compelled to give back and what better way than through volunteering. Spending time with the elderly, fills my soul. To be able to give them the gift of time is rewarding, especially knowing that many are unable to see their grandchildren as often as they would like. Volunteering at the St. Cloud Hospital is something I really enjoy because I am able to help out in a medical scene and complete tasks that help support the medical team. Finally, helping my church with various activities is important to me because I have the opportunity to serve others, practice my faith, and fuel my passion for helping

My job as a chemistry teaching assistant also required a combination of personal and practical skills and ability to be assertive without arrogance. Each week the students had to submit a heavy load of assignments, and keeping track of grading alone required a developed level in time efficiency, accountability, and organizing skills. I had to be knowledgeable enough about the subject to comprise worksheet, practice exams, review sessions, and grade fairly. I also had to know how to communicate that knowledge to the students: proving feedback on misunderstood requirements, clearly answering any questions they had about the material. I knew an accelerated chemistry course can be overwhelming, I always encouraged and motivated the students when…

A peer mentor is defined as a person who uses their resources to support, encourage and inform someone. Going into this semester, I was unaware that I would be mentoring another student and thus doubted my abilities. Although I was excited to become a mentor, I questioned whether I would truly be able to make a difference in someone’s life. The difference that I wanted to make could be as simple as helping someone ace a test, but the news of mentoring threw me off track. Nonetheless, I gathered myself and tried to maintain a positive attitude.…

Reflection: The Leader, The Teacher & You Summary The book provides Mr Lim Siong Guan’s insights of leadership that he has gathered from his years in the civil service. It is structured into 2 parts, ‘The Teacher’ which focuses on Mr Lim’s lessons learnt from his teachers and experiences in civil service, and ‘The Leader’, where he shares his insightful thoughts on leadership within a set of principles. The final section ‘The Leader, The Teacher’ concludes his view that a true leader should not be concerned with purely his own success, but to be a teacher who rejoices when his students are able to maximise their full potential. To me, the book is not specifically discussing on leadership within the civil service sector itself, but stays relevant to all who wants to positively influence people around them.…
