Each of these are effective for establishing an effective environment for counseling. Genuineness is the ability to live one’s own life in a way that you would like to see in your clients, “practice what you preach.” The second is warmth, to offer comfort to your clients, opening an effective rapport with them. This first glimpse into the life of an OTEAM member has been enlightening, both on a personal level and as I move forward as a First Year Seminar mentor. I learned about IUPUI, it's mission for its staff and students, and how OTEAM is interwoven with the university's goals. I learned how to engage my students by being there, choosing my attitude, incorporating elements of play, and by making their day (small moments build up to a big impact). I've also learned not to push students away by simply offering advice but to assist them by building up a helping relationship, where they're ultimately in charge of their own actions. I've also gotten a taste of the incredibly diversity on campus by being able to collaborate and learn with other OTEAMers…

Something I have made a difference in my community by being involved with the Two Rivers Young Chautauqua Program sponsored by Colorado Humanities. I have participated in this program since 4th grade through my senior year as a performer, emcee and student mentor. I have thoroughly enjoyed researching, script writing and performing characters throughout the years, however, I am most proud of my role as a student mentor for the Young Chautauqua Program and helping kids get excited about reading, writing, and history as well as Performing Arts. I have been a volunteer mentor since 2014, doing so means helping elementary through high school age students research a famous deceased historical character, write about that character’s life as if they…

Although the term “Mentor” dates back to ….., mentoring in the field of education is a relatively new concept that has only gained in popularity since the late 1980’s ( Campbell & Campbell, 2007, p. 526). An attempt was made in 1988 to identify the roles and functions of mentoring in education and how undergraduate students perceive the mentoring experience. As the concept evolved and gained more acceptance more research studies attempted to conceptualize mentoring for both undergraduate and graduate students. There are many different views on what mentoring is, what it is not, what its goals should be, how it should be practiced, and by whom (Crisp & Cruz, 2009; Budge, 2006). This paper will discuss a 2009 literature review that was made…

Throughout the counseling in training program, students learn to increase their awareness in knowledge of counseling, culture, society, and ethics of counseling. Students also learn about themselves in the sense of their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as their desire as to what field and direction they wish to continue their education and possibly career in. My personal desire to help people heal emotionally and psychologically will allow me to be an effective counselor. I like to see people succeed in life and I will do whatever is in my power to help them do that, as long as they are willing to help themselves in the process. Something that may hinder my ability to counsel effectively may be in not knowing exactly how to help a client with a specific issue. The thing with this though is that I will not stop at that and I will continue to find a way to help them and uncover the treatment that will provide the most necessary interventions for the client with the least amount of harm to them. Another hindrance is my apprehension against prescribing psychotic medication if that becomes necessary and I believe it I were to have to do that I may have to refer my client to someone else for that part of the therapy because I am not comfortable with that.…

Over the past one and half month, the class of PDE 502 (Counselling and Career Education) has taught me some major lessons for life in dealing with the clients in response to their emotional needs. The role of a counsellor is not unlike that of a friend where by it is nurtured by being in each other’s company, talking over everyday issues and sharing feelings. However, what sets a counsellor apart is their experience and the ability to apply counselling theories and techniques to assist people in gaining awareness, insight and explore ways of solving their own issues.…
