Reflection on learners assessment

Gopee, 2008, states that proper assessment involves staying at learners side and observing them perform a clinical skill with the intention of analysing the performance and whether the skill was carried out competently. Therefore, assessments are an essential component of education and a key element of the student or learners experience. Consequently, assessments are used as a critical element during the mentoring process by mentors to constantly analyse and evaluate the skills set the students learn. However, the method of assessment must be considered in terms of reliability, accountability, validity, acceptability in order to evaluate the suitability of assessment itself.(Chandrat lake et al,2010 )

‘Nurse X’ carried out the chosen procedure as explained in the introductory meeting – firstly, ‘nurse X’ explained the procedure and then obtained the patients consent before initiating the procedure. ‘Nurse X’ also carried out the mandatory procedures involved in a clinical setting to reduced infection according to the trust guidelines i.e. ‘nurse X’ washed the patients hands first and then ‘nurse X’ washed her own hands, as hand washing is an integral part of infection control.

While ‘nurse X’ was carrying out this procedure, I assessed ‘nurse X’ as she was monitoring glucose levels in a diabetic patient who underwent a surgical procedure under general anaesthesia, using the competency statement CS18 ( appendix-1). ‘Nurse X’ performed the procedure to meet the standards of my local hospital. Furthermore, she also documented the results on the patients care plan. However, ‘nurse X’ left the testing strip and the lancet on the patients bed- which doesn’t reach hygiene

Authentic assessment practices, permit the educator not only a richer evaluation of students and their capabilities, but they also support and transform the processes of teaching and learning (Sheppard, 3). In making overall assessments about individuals accomplishments, it is necessary to consider not just one performance (even if it is judged by multiple criteria), but a variety of performances over time. Traditional testing, especially standardized testing, minimizes reliability problems by limiting the human element in assessment. One need not be…

As I was cleaning down the Dina map and thermometer, one of the nurses came into the ward area. She looked around the room, walked back out and said to me as she was leaving that she would return in a few minutes. I was confused but remained in the room for her to return. When she did she handed me one of the hospital admission forms with a page open which had the “Maintaining a safe environment” care plan interventions on it.…

Apprenticeship Reflection Day 11 Where are your strengths/areas of concern as a teacher? The areas of teaching that I feel are my strengths have really been confirmed through out this mentorship. I definitely have a deep knowledge on both of my content concentrations, and I have really been able to show my strengths in planning and implementing engaging lessons for the students I teach at BCMS. I also think I have been able to form real bonds with these students in the short amount of time that I have spent with them, which has caused them to respect me more, behave better in my class, and most importantly work harder on all the activities and assignments.…

This process can be difficult and overwhelming, but that is why I think the mentor program is so beneficial for incoming students. As a mentor, I can share my knowledge about the Campbell Business School and other facilities in order to encourage academic and personal success. Furthermore, mentoring gives me the opportunity to enhance both my organization and leadership skills by advising different students coming from various cultural and ethical backgrounds. This program will allow me to meet new people with whom I can share ideas and I myself can also learn from, fostering a sense of belonging in the Campbell community.…

Reflection as a Counsellor. This was a learning curve in for me in this course and I enjoyed been the counsellor even though, I was a little worried about this assessment session been that it was my first client assessment. I was mindful of my report, because the context of why the assessment and/or test were administered is important. Gersten (2013) highlights the importance of having competency to administer, score and interpret the result of a test to explain what the scores mean. Otherwise, the sores can be vague and ambiguous to the client with no practical utility.…

Reflection When signing up to take the Final Project Course this fall I was extremely nervous and not excited to start. Walking into the first day of class and learning more about what the final project would entail, I did feel slightly better but still scared that it was going to be too overwhelming and hard to complete by myself. Luckily, the individual meetings and emails with my professor made everything much more clear and inviting. These final project meetings were very helpful in terms of receiving constructive criticism and then going back home to make changes to the paper.…
