I come from a very small town in South Dakota that is predominantly white, with middle to upper class income individuals. This is a big difference compared to North Omaha, where Girls Inc. is located. I wanted to experience something outside of my comfort zone. My increasing concern that the efforts and needs of poor, inner city African-American citizens not being represented equitably and appropriately grabbed my attention. Due to the increase in violent crimes being committed in this area of town, I thought that I needed to start somewhere. I originally started at the Boys & Girls Club of Omaha, but the need for mentors at this time was not needed. I was told to check back in the summer time, when they received an increase in members. So, I checked into Girls Inc. and they accepted me with open arms. I will forever be grateful for Girls Inc., my mentee, and the ability to make a difference. This experience has me interested in my community now more than ever. This certainly will not be my last civic
