Mentor Interview: John Brunning From The Lethbridge Police Service

Mentor Interview My mentor for this assignment was, John Brunning from the Lethbridge police service (LPS). He came to the college to answer any questions we had regarding the 7 dimensions of wellness, such as what John does to balance his work and personal life, how he gets over stress from his work life, what he does to stay in shape, some challenges he has overcome, what he does to get along with people in the workplace, as well as how important it is to trust your partner. He has been working for the agency for 5 years now, and he is now working in the traffic section. I chose to interview John because he has had several years of experience in the field of public safety. John seemed like a very outgoing and happy person, and I thought …show more content…
One challenge in particular was when he arrived to a bar after being called because a man was instigating fights. John took the man to his cruiser because after doing a background check on him, he saw, the man had warrants out for his arrest. The man starts backing away from him, John then began to chase him and later stopped him. They began to fist fight, and the man would not give in because he was on some sort of drug, being extremely in shape john was able to outlast the man and finally won the scrap. This is not the only time john has had to or will have to use physical force on another man, the way he overcomes these challenges is going to the gym and becoming fit. He isn’t the biggest guy and it gives him lots of confidence knowing he can outrun or physically be stronger than anyone, even someone twice his size. Being small like John is, I think for myself it would be important to be very physically fit, and confident about any situation you may run into as a police officers.
Improving personal wellness My mentor says that he lives a very well-balanced life, and has no need for improvement in any of the dimensions of wellness. I believe my mentor when he says this because he seems very happy about everything and laughs about many things. I need to work on almost every aspect of my wellness, still being young, I have not found a very good balance in my life, and need to do my best to work on that.

In the study conducted by McElvain et al., data was studied involving 186 officer shootings with just over 300 officers involved (McElvain & Kposowa, 2008, p. 506). The data that was examined occurred over a 15 year period of time, enough time to provide an adequate amount of data (McElvain & Kposowa, 2008, p. 506). The department involved, Rivereside County Sheriff’s Department, deals with a large amount of diversity for a population. The county consists of 47% Hispanics, 37.8% Caucasian, and 6% Asians (California). The county has a 16.8% poverty level, much less than the poverty level located in the New Jersey cities found in Chapman’s study (California).…

John has a large ego and plans to hold true to it. In the novel John states “How may I teach them to walk like a man in the world, and I have sold my friends.” (134) John says this as the judges are trying to get him to confess his good name which carries much of the Pride and Respect he has. One other example where john shows his pride is when he states “They think to go like saints. I have not to spoil their names.”…

Wellness Assessment Paper Two results that were surprising or helpful to me were my physical nutrition subtotal and financial average because I didn’t think that I was doing okay financially and doing everything right. Also, my physical nutrition was a surprise to because I thought I was doing everything but turns out I need to do some more work and improve on it a little bit. Having better physical nutrition can be motivated by my goal to lose weight and become a healthier person. This is all connected back to the holism theory which states that for most needs to be motivated and have some motivation to improve on and they also need to be arranged on a hierarchy.…

Law Enforcement Interview Police officers are seen under the radar in everyday life. By under the radar I mean, we notice them driving around town, or when we are slamming on our brakes passing them going twenty miles over the speed limit on the interstate, or when we all pretend to be perfect drivers when we notice them trailing us from our rear view mirrors. What we don’t notice is who the police officer that’s giving us a ticket is, or what their ranking is or how well trained or educated they are. Police officers are easily disliked by the public because of their jobs of handing out tickets, or making necessary arrests but all they’re trying to do is keep the community safe.…
