Mental illness is a condition that alters a person's thinking process, reasoning, mood and behavior. There are many conditions that are identified as mental illnesses. However, the most common types are Anxiety, Mood, Post traumatic stress disorder, Personality disorder, Obsessive Compulsive disorder, depression, Autism, schizophrenia and bipolar. Most conditions may affect a person's ability to interact and communicate with others, they may require treatment to live a functional life. Some people may experience the condition once and recover, however, others may have prolonged episodes throughout their lives. Therefore, the mentally ill do hurt when negative commentary is made about them personally or towards their condition. In short, the society should stop treating this condition as an amusement and instead stop isolating and discriminating the mentally ill . As it was best mentioned by Mental Health America, “The attitudes of family, friends and the community towards people with a mental illness plays a critical part in determine [determining] their quality of life”(“Mental Illness and the Family”). The community should know that creating setbacks will not make them have outstanding mental status. The society should be educated and to acknowledge that the negative commentary, does affect a person's adjustment which in turn interferes with their recovery or treatment progress.
It is extremely impossible for someone with any mental illness to make their symptoms go away, however, they can seek counseling and therapy from professionals. The counseling and therapy can help the person understand their illness, how to manage their symptoms and being able to live a healthier life. The purpose of the mentally ill to seek help can bring positivity in their life because they can be able to talk through the negative attributes and stereotypes.
