The mentally ill are impaired, not criminals. Yes, they commit crimes just like any ordinary person, but their disorder is the cause of their bad decision making. The mentally ill do not have it easy; they end up suffering in prison by solitary confinement, commit suicide and sometimes even get raped. Solitary confinement is where they keep those who are in need of punishment, but it is usually used to keep the mentally ill inmates away from the rest of the population. I think the mentally ill will do better in a mental facility, especially getting the treatment they need. The mentally ill will eventually stop being a danger to themselves and others. They will be where they belong rather than where they were thrown in. We cannot just send them to a prison because there is no space for them somewhere else; there should be options for them.
