The purpose of a war is different in each war. Some wars are fought for peace, and others are fought for the wanting of acquiring something. These two kinds of wars can be represented by the novels Old Man’s War by John Scalzi and Enders Game by Orson Scott Card. In both of the novels, military leaders manipulate their soldiers in a way to create a winning situation. The leaders advantages of using these soldiers come with costs and risks. The costs of wars include a soldier’s mentality during and after the war, physical soldiers, and the costs of what it takes to get something that a military wants. There are two times when Valentine was need to help Ender with his emotions in Ender’s Game. One resulting from seeing Peter in the mirror in Ender’s game, Ender had looked into mirror and saw Peter. He kept remembering and thinking that the game is trying to tell him that he is like Peter (117-118 Card). Ender later shows frustration and acknowledges that he is the “bloody bastard” that Colonel Graff wants (118 Card). The horrific image of Peter in Enders mind shows how his mentality affects his emotions and how he reacts. Later after winning a battle against two teams, Ender says, “I don’t care about the game anymore” (Card 219). Ender begins to lose his emotions, and is later promoted to go to command school. Ender then goes on leave for 3 monthes at a lake. Colonel Graff takes Valentine to Ender to be his “therapy”. Colonel Graff says, “We need your brother badly. Humanity is on a cusp” (Card 233). Valentine is grown up enough to know just how much danger the world is in (Card 233). The IF progresses Ender through school faster than anyone else has. The IF takes control of Ender and doesn’t care about his mental state. In command school, Ender loses sleep, has bad dreams, and his training is pushed to his limit. Ender says, “I’m afraid im going crazy” (Card 286). The IF wants the destruction of the buggers. When Ender destroys the bugger colony, Colonel Graff …show more content…
CDF soldiers are put through mental challenges of the war in space and with their new bodies. John Perry tells Alan, “I don’t feel human anymore, Alan” (Scalzi 213). Later, Lieutenant Keyes tells Perry, “You’re right on schedule, then, Perry. It takes about a year for most people to figure out they’ve turned into some soulless killing machine with no conscience or morals. Some sooner, some later” (214 Scalzi). Another mental toughness is knowing you are not the number one force. The Rraey were able to calculate where the CDF was heading, and the CDF would kill just to have the technology to do that. In Old Man’s War, the CDF fight to be able to ask the Consu questions about the technology they gave to the Rraey (Scalzi 311-312). This has the cost of losing few soldiers, but the risk is worth it.
