The main characters in both of these films played different sports (Jim played and coached baseball, and Pre was involved with distance running), but there still are some similarities and, of course, some difference between these two athletes. In both of these movies, extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, mental toughness, fan support, pre-competition routines, and pep-talks all played a part. One thing that was very different was their motivation to play the sport. While Jim was mainly intrinsic motivated, he did have extrinsic motivation to get him to try out for the major league again in the form of a bet. Pre didn’t want to go through the stress, and the negative effects of what people will think of him if he lost another race.
