Mental Illness Personal Statement

My deep-seated belief that mind, body, and environment are interconnected, and my commitment to helping others improve their overall (not just physical or mental) wellness, as well as hopefully preventing illness in many cases, are my main motivations for wanting to be in the health field. From my childhood, I watched various family members struggle with food and substance addictions as a means of coping with life stressors, and I also observed their health deteriorate from the damage they were doing to themselves by not managing stress and anxiety properly. I hope to increase my knowledge throughout my graduate studies such that I can implement what I have learned to help individuals that otherwise might not understand how they can prevent many illnesses through behavior modification. For example, after receiving my aerobics/fitness instructor certification, I worked as an aerobics instructor at the Warren County YMCA where I taught a diverse group of individuals different fitness classes. Also, as a volunteer with the American Diabetes Association, I have assisted with the Step Out Louisville Walk as a volunteer wellness educator. I walked in the Bowling Green JDRF fundraiser, and I organized the first ever Community Walk to raise diabetes awareness and funds for a cure in Edmonson County. Throughout my volunteer work with the American Diabetes Association, part-time work for the Board of Education in Edmonson County, and my coursework at Western Kentucky University, I have also been a parent volunteer at my children's schools. I have served as PTO Vice President for two years previously. Currently, I am serving as PTO Vice President for our local middle school, and I am also the current treasurer of the ECMS Cheer Parent Booster
