For some high functioning folks the signs and symptoms of their mental illness does not deter them from attending school and completing tasks. In some instances, these individuals’ feelings are invalidated because they are able to function relatively well on the exterior. In these cases the folks involved must seek drastic measure to be heard usually by self-harm. Illustration of these self-harm tendencies is cutting, medication overdose, other risky behaviors and attempted suicide. In order for the colleges to offer a wraparound service for folks that experience mental illness, often times this means the college is acknowledging that there is a consistent challenge at the school and a desire for help. To educate our students, families and those directly involved. As a society we cannot continue to have an uneducated society on mental health. 50% of Americans will have a mental illness at one point in their life, now we add their friends, family, and support system “for some, maintaining a large community to offer support becomes important. Surrounding ourselves with other people offers solace” (Cohen, 62).
