During my later high school years I discovered how much I enjoyed chemistry’s predictability and logical structure. Balancing a chemical reaction on paper and then seeing it work in the lab made me realize that I had a love for chemistry. It was fascinating and exciting when I saw the transformation of elements into useful products. I loved learning how matter could be reduced into their building blocks, and then by putting those building blocks together in different ways new forms of matter could be created. I became both interested and challenged by chemistry during this time, and from that point on, science has been a passion.
As a junior in high school, I experienced the life of an undergraduate science major while at a five-week accelerated MD/ENG program at Vanderbilt University. During this program, I participated in pre-medical courses including, anatomy

Seeing these people experiencing the worst and, in some cases, the last days of their lives increased my desire to become a physician. I was able to continue scribing despite these, at times near overwhelming, emotional challenges. The care of the patient was what really mattered in that moment, rather than my emotions. Because of these experiences, there is now no question that I am able to become a

Through my clinical experience, I learned that being able to empathize with your patient is very important in the healthcare field. The first week I was at Panorama City, I helped some CNAs turn a patient so they can change her dressing on a bedsore that she had got from another nursing home. The whole time she was fighting us, yelling at us, and scratching us.…

Seeing this patient, actually getting to see what she looked like, meeting her family, and knowing more about her story made the situation much more real than I’m used to. On the other hand it was nice to know I still have feelings. I think I needed that reminder that I’m not numb to the emergencies people face, it is just my coping mechanism that gets me through my 911 job. I know I’ll develop other coping mechanisms to deal with the situations I face as a social worker.…

Because I came into this counseling program to better help those individuals who suffer from addiction, I want to be able to balance my personal experience with addiction and my long history of sponsorship with my newly acquired clinical mental health counseling skills. I realize that addiction can be an amazingly difficult problem to treat. I know that it takes a strong minded, experienced sponsor to help individuals find their way to sobriety. I also believe that recovery must go beyond just being sober, and a mental health counselor is in a better position to help with compounding issues that a person who suffers from addiction faces. I want to be able to not only help a person stay sober, but help them have a fulfilling life, emotional…

This love for the science influenced me to take upon myself the challenge of AP Chemistry. So far I have further developed and honed my skills. I have further ingrained in myself the idea to question everything.…

How does your major (or minor) fit into your life’s plan? Chemistry, like all other sciences, provides us with a better understanding of how matter behaves.
