Genetics: genetic susceptibility is passed through families and can lead to many more than one member of the family to suffer from the same mental illness. Sometimes the genetic make-up of a person may make them more susceptible to certain mental illness, but it takes a traumatic event or injury to trigger it.
Head injuries or trauma can cause mental health problems if certain areas of the brain are damaged.
Trauma during pregnancy from the mother having an illness, poor diet, or substance abuse can bring about mental health problems. Also lack of oxygen or trauma during birth.
Substance abuse is common amongst people who suffer from mental illnesses.
