I have had the opportunity to observe and be a member of many teams, groups, cultures, and organizations that have had both good and bad mental health. These experiences have shown me the profound impact that mental health of the individuals has on the communities to which they belong. In the field of intelligence, I have worked with many products of psychological research in the form of analysis of individuals and human response to external stimuli. Academically, in the study of Homeland Security, the subject of understanding the human elements of security are large part of the curriculum. In order to understand how to secure against an individual that presents a threat to others, it is crucial to understand what the motivation of that individual is. The same is true for the response to natural disasters, it is important to understand how and why people react to different threat scenarios so that institutional responses can be appropriately and proportionally applied. My own personal journey with Mental Health is a significant reason that I am drawn to the field. I have observed how my work with a therapist has impacted not only me but those around me.
