For my whole life I have been driven to help others thrive regardless of their obstacles, which is why I admire the mission of the EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases. As a senior Community Health Major at the University of Maryland, I have learned the crucial role health policy has on benefiting the most lives possible, and I appreciate the EveryLife Foundation’s Newborn Screening Initiative for striving to do just that. I would be excited to bring my experience working with unique genetic diseases and task-managing skills to the Newborn Screening Fellows position at the EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases, and I hope to be considered for the position.

For example, I helped develop a campus-wide project with the University of Maryland Health Center to improve advertisement of on-campus mental health services to students and faculty. In order to do this, my team and I researched the prevalence of mental health illnesses on our campus and campuses throughout the nation, as well as best practices for addressing the growing rates of poor mental health. We collaborated with our community partner at the University Health Center and students alike in order to learn the University’s current procedures for addressing poor mental health and the most effective strategies for reaching the student population. The skills I learned through this project would benefit the Newborn Screening Initiative because the fellow position requires collaboration between families, policy makers, and partners in order to reach a mutually beneficial
