In this presentation, I am going to talk about what mental health is and the different kind of conditions you can get, the early warning signs of mental health problems, why you can experience mental health problems, and what help is available for those who suffer. What is mental health?
• Everyone has mental health, it is important in every stage of life, you can have good and bad mental health. It is a person’s condition regarding their emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental health affects how people feel, think and act in daily life. Bad mental health is when they can’t achieve these and have a condition that stops them but they can recover from this.
Conditions
Mental health conditions include;
• Anxiety - is a term for several mental disorders that causes feelings of anxiety and fear, nervousness, apprehension, and worrying. This can affect how people feel and behave. This can cause physical symptoms, such as a fast heart rate and shakiness.
• Bipolar disorder - can be known as manic depression, it is a condition that affects your moods which can go from feeling low and having no energy (depression) to feeling high and having loads of energy (mania).
• Depression- is where you feel persistently unhappy for weeks or months rather than just a few days, it leaves the person suffering with a low mood, feeling sad, hopeless, and unimportant.
• Schizophrenia - is a condition diagnosed to those who have severely disrupted beliefs and experiences, they can see or hear things that are not there, can appear to act strange because they respond to delusions and hallucinations.

Why you can experience mental health problems?
Reasons include;
• Biological factors such as brain defect and injury
• Psychological factors such as neglect, poor ability to relate to others
• Environmental factors such as social, and cultural expectations
• Life experiences such as trauma or abuse can cause mental health problems such an anxiety
• Family history can cause mental illness because if one family member is affected it increases the risk of it being passed down to others.
Help available
Help available includes;
• Going to the doctors where you can receive tablets and go on a waiting list for counselling, this can take a while as a lot of people suffer and have to wait to get the help they need.
• Therapy and counselling where you can talk to someone about your problems and go in to depth about it
• Helping yourself by improving your health, striving to your full potential or taking the step to call a doctor or an organisation.
• There are organisations such as mind, and SAMH provide numbers which you can call for free so that you have someone to talk to, they can also refer you to other organisations and services around you so you can receive the help you
