I started a non-profit after my own battles with mental health including depression. My mother suffered from clinical depression and my uncle, one of her closest brothers, did as well. He shot himself in the mouth because he chose to take his anti-depressants with alcohol, and eight months later, my mother died of an unrelated illness, but I truly believe that her lack of desire to live apart from her favorite brother has a great deal to do with why she died as well.

Daily I hear people tell me that they aren’t sad so they can’t be depressed. And while depression includes sadness sometimes, that is not always the case. For example, postpartum depression is defined as “moderate to severe depression in a woman after she has given birth. It may occur soon after delivery or up to a year later. Most of the time, it occurs within the first 3 months after delivery (Berger, 2016).”
Giving birth isn’t a time associated with sadness, but usually because your hormones are all out of whack, it can cause major depression to the point of suicide.
So, the reason why this broad topic matters is because there are tons of different types and levels of depression and almost too much information out there, so much so, that the true definition of the disorder can be muddled. So it is my personal goal and responsibility to help people understand that depression does have a little breadth and that we need to know that in order to remove the stigma and bridge the gap surrounding the
