In my poster I have chosen to discuss the mental health illness as a “contemporary issue in social policy”, I will demonstrate my understanding of mental health issues. What is being done to address the mental health issues. The “NHS FIVE YEAR FORWARD VIEW 2014”(NHS England) is a report that lays out a blue print for the delivery of mental health services going to the years of 2029/21 (england.nhs.uk). This implementation is underpinned by the extra funding to enable the establishment of long-term sustainable mental health services.
The term mental health is referred to by the US surgeon general as “the successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people and providing the ability to adapt to change and cope with diversity”. However, having a mental health illness means that one’s mental function may be impaired. Mental health illness is a term that is used to refer to a collection of diagnosable mental health problems, such as change in reasoning, moods, or impaired functioning. I will discuss the main points of legislation on and the economic context of current issue in mental health illness.

Mental illness has socio-economic effects on both the affected, those around them and the government budget. Mental illness and poverty have a complex relationship, it imposes a sizeable load on the individuals’ economic situation as they will no longer be as effective in holding their jobs to earn their living due to the effects of the illness.
