Mental Health Days Research Paper

Have you ever felt the need to take a day off school because of high stress and anxiety levels? Studies have shown that teenagers have recently shown an increase in stress, depression, and anxiety levels. This can lead to poor school performance. Should students have to go to school when they feel mentally unstable or should mental health days be a valid excuse for an absence. I believe that students should be able to use mental health as a valid excuse, just as sick days because it is quite impossible to focus on school and classwork when on the verge of a mental breakdown or on the verge of tears. Just as physical health is a valid excuse, mental health should be too. If we pile school on top of stress and give students no downtime severe depression can develop and may result in suicide. Usatoday.com states " If you look at teen suicide statistics, stress is one of the things that leads to suicide attempts." Students need days to relax and recover emotionally and mentally every so often without having to worry of possibly becoming truant or being punished for taking care of themselves. …show more content…
School life isn't just fun and games. As it is many suffer from anxiety, stress, deprression, and other mental illnesses. According to Healthline.com, " Of students surveyed in the spring 2014 National College Health Assessment, 33 percent reported feeling so depressed within the past 12 months that it was difficult to function." School life isn't about lounging around, in fact most times it's about stressing over projects, assignments, and grades, sometimes having anxiety the night before school, or crying over not wanting to go to school due to fear of
