I want to become a mental health counselor and work my way up to a Psychologist. This would be my choice because I like the thought of helping others through their tough times. There are many depressed and even suicidal teens in the world. It makes me feel uneasy when I think of how much pain they have went through. The reason I want to become a mental health counselor is because I want to be someone that a person can come to and trust that I will help them through their situation. Ever since I was little I wanted to help people mentally. Being a helpful and caring person is what I strive to be. There were 134,500 Mental Health Counselors employed, as of 2014 (“Bureau of Labor Statistics”). These counselors can work regular hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, mental health clinics, hospice care centers, home health care centers, schools, detention centers, adoption agencies, law enforcement agencies, and even branches of the military. Mental Health Counselors deal with clients with a variety of different mental and emotional problems. First the counselor needs to assess the client before actually treating them. Assessing clients involves asking them questions and having them fill out questionnaires. Most of the counselors use the traditional method of psychotherapy which allows the patients to speak freely about their problems and their lives. Clients with long-term illnesses are referred to a psychologist. The beginning salary is $39,270 (“Careers In Psychology”). There was about 173,900 Psychologists employed in 2014(“Bureau of Labor Statistics”). They work at clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, community and mental health centers, for the government, and in branches of the military. Some psychologists even have their own private practice. “Psychologists study cognitive, emotional, and social processes and behavior by observing, interpreting, and recording how people relate to one another and their environments,”(“College Grad”). They look at the behavior of their clients and study the behavioral and emotional patterns, in order to treat their patient’s problems.The average salary of a psychologist is $72,580 (“Bureau of Labor Statistics”).
