This course has taught me how to be more self-aware about what type of counselor I want to be and focus more on my values and accomplish what is important for me. This course also taught me how to be more flexible. Having a full-time job working 40 or more hours a week plus school; it was hard and still is, but having flexibility when I become a Mental Health Counselor will help me because I must be flexible to meet the client needs so we can establish a client/counselor relationship and maintain that relationship.
Through this course, I learned about my professional identity, how to bring my personal values into Mental Health Counseling without losing myself, yet help the client without pushing my values on that person. It really helped me

The knowledge I acquired from ASD100 This course was very interesting to me as I believed as an addict and alcoholic that I knew a great deal about substance abuse, drug use and methods to treat addiction, as I have attended a 12 step based in patient program, as well as a cognitive behavioral therapy based program during my incarceration in the Federal prison system. I however did obtain new information about the video series such as how alcohol effects the brain, and not just the liver. I always believed that it just destroyed the liver, boy was I mistaken.…

The learning experience of Dr. Norward’s course, Generalist Social Welfare Practice, has allowed me to develop my interpersonal skills and feel more confident working with clients. I have faced many challenges and obstacles, but I have also learned a lot about myself as a student as well as a future social worker. This course has helped me to reignite my passion for activism, but also explore the sort of social work I wish to partake in such as becoming a broker for services. I was passionate about the well-being of animals, and was told I could be anything I wanted to be if I just believed in it. Upon learning that the sight of blood made me nauseous, I realized that wasn’t true in the least and that I must find an occupation that I have the skills for. After doing research on many careers that I am interested in, I have deduced that either a career as an editor or a mental health counselor would be fitting for me. Work environments, education levels and skills, and tasks are completely different between editors and mental health counselors.…

I agree with you that practicum is the beginning of a life of service that will benefit those who need help the most. Practicum is important because practicum is the first step to becoming a licensed counselor and the first step to living a life of service to others. The counseling practicum fosters the synthesis of academic learning with practical, hands-on experience. The practicum also provides the student with preparation for further training in professional counseling. Practicum is a time for application of the attitudes, learning, and skills that the student has acquired in his or her classroom experience.…
