What They Do
Mental Health Counselors and their duties are pretty straightforward and self-explanatory. They help treat and give patients ways to overcome emotional or mental disorders and relationship issues through therapeutic inquiry and try to offer a clearer understanding of their situation. The counselors often encourage the client to speak of the emotional or problematic experience; they make them open up. They help the patients, young and old, process what they’ve been going through/whatever is troubling them and somewhat become their guide in decision-making . The job outlook is promising for mental health counselors. It is expected that the occupation will grow 20 percent from 2014 to 2024! This means that mental health insurance is just as significant as any other diseases that people would be covered for. Employment is particularly promising in rural areas or certain communities. It was reported that in 2014 that 134,500 people were employed as mental health counselors. In 2014, it is expected to reach 160,900 occupations.
Why I Chose This Career
This career caught my eye specifically due to the fact that I heard it deals with helping people out and talking about their problems. I have a friend that is currently going through some dark issues within her life and I want to help people like my friend and cast them out of it and into the light. I want them to know that they’re not alone and that they can be comfortable opening up to me or any other therapist/mental health counselor, given the confidentiality of each and every session.
