The concerns of mental health providers include conditions where persons go undetected, undiagnosed, and under treated among persons who see doctors (Hooper, 2014). Clinical mental health counselors can fill the services and treatment gaps reported by Doctors who do not feel confident or competent to provide mental health services their patients need (Hooper, 2014). In the role of a primary care provider a mental health counselor can collaborate with a primary care physician and this may foster optimal, patient-centered, holistic care (Hooper, 2014).
