In completing a degree in Mental Health Counseling, one will learn theories and techniques of counseling. Not only this, but also learn to implement these learnings in a professional setting. After doing hours of research on the requirements of a Mental Health Counselor, I still felt very passionate and determined to accomplish my goal. I’ve personally faced a time of crisis after my traumatic brain bleed; I wanted so desperately for someone to just hear me so I didn’t feel so alone. I consistently hear how the feeling of not going through a situation alone empowers so many people. I would love to be given the opportunity to be there for a client and aid them in a time of crisis. I’ve learned first hand and from others that expressing your story, your thoughts/opinions is the first step in feeling heard and gaining self empowerment. …show more content…
I have also obtained experience at a mental health facility Miracle Clubhouse as a student assistant. I have maintained a 3.2 GPA and excelled in statistics and research methods courses my junior and senior year. These courses influenced me to join in independent research with a psychology professor for the Summer and Fall 2016. At the Miracle Clubhouse, I have worked one on one with people of different ages who have mental illness. I have further volunteered for numerous organizations including Soles for Souls, Coats for Kids, Air force Marathon, and others.
