I am very interested in the field of Mental Health Counseling
This career field is a good fit for me, because I work well under pressure and genuinely care about the well-being of others. I began working with the Department of Mental Health almost seven years ago and learned a great deal form that experience. I realized that working with adolescents who are diagnosed with mental illness can be very challenging. Also, I learned that a lot of patients experience trauma, can be easily agitated, and go into a crisis phase. During this crisis cycle, you have to be prepared to intervene immediately and do what is in the client’s best interest. I learned very quickly how to react to stressful situations that may affect a client’s behavior and

I take advantage of every opportunity given to effectively communication with clients, actively listen to their needs, and help resolve their issues consulting with a multi-disciplinary treatment team. I have spoken with various professionals in the field to receive advice to achieve my future career goals. I have performed research online to learn more about Mental Health Counseling and Social Work. I learned that each profession requires field experience hours, so I have spoken with my facility’s psychologist about future internship opportunities. After narrowing down my top selections for universities, I will start the process of applying to graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling or Social Work. After graduation, I will take my state boards to become a licensed professional counselor through the NBCC (National Board for Certified Counselors) which fee is $195.00 or a licensed master social worker through the ASWB (Association of Social Work Board) which fee is $230.00. I plan on advancing with the Mississippi State Personnel Board and to pursue a position as a therapist with my current employer, Specialized Treatment

As a student eager to get out of the classroom and experience working in the mental health field, as well as interact with those suffering from mental illness, an internship was the logical next step to gain this type of knowledge. Although this comes with its natural feelings of anxiety and inadequacy, the knowledge and life skills I’ve gained through this experience has helped me grow as a person, has made me feel more prepared to help those struggling, and has given me the skills to overcome such negative feelings in the future. My internship was with Crawford County Human Services, specifically spending my time with the Blended Case Managers (BCM), and for a small amount of my internship, the Family Case Managers (FCM). For a brief…

After my parents divorced and we were removed from the environment I always knew I would work with that population in life, but I did not know in what kind of sense, whether it was legal or mental health. I was passionate for that population because it was close and dear to my heart. I have always had the mentality that if I could help or save one person than everything I ever worked to that point has been worth it. I wanted to give back to society as they did with helping my fad recover and lead a healthy and abstinent life before passing away.…

I also believe that recovery must go beyond just being sober, and a mental health counselor is in a better position to help with compounding issues that a person who suffers from addiction faces. I want to be able to not only help a person stay sober, but help them have a fulfilling life, emotional…
