For the purpose of this analysis, Terry Ramos was interviewed. Terry is a thirty five year old woman residing in the Bronx, NY. Terry is an expectant mother, girlfriend, stepmother, sister, aunt, niece, and family confidant. Terry is of Puerto-Rican decent but says that she has been heavily influenced by American culture as she does not speak Spanish and does not know much about her heritage. She is an employee of the city of New York and has worked in the educational system for fifteen years. She was initially a student aide then a school aide and is currently a community assistant. The authors further iterate that children in poorer areas are at an increased risk of seeing domestic violence, parental drug abuse, and developing mental health challenges which can have a negative impact on them as adults. Yet, these adolescents do not need to become a product of their environment. They can overcome if they are able to use self-regulation which is the process of placing their goals high above their challenges and the negative circumstances they may experience as a result of inner city living (2003). Terry was raised not having much money. She did not have fancy resources however, she did not let this become a deterrent towards setting and achieving her goals. She states that growing up without the male influence of Carlos has caused their relationship to be distant and awkward. She’d like to have a meaningful relationship with Carlos but she feels that too much time has passed. Shifting gears, in 1990, Yolanda began a relationship with Matthew Young. As a result Matthew became Terry’s step-father. This was a pivotal time in Terry’s life. There was a shift in Yolanda and Terry’s relationship because Terry was molested at the age of fourteen by Matthew. Yolanda continued her relationship with Matthew for several years after the molestation and Matthew was never legally held accountable. Terry was undoubtedly pained and angered by the continuation of Yolanda and Matthew’s romance; Terry became angry and detached from Yolanda. Terry realizes that the anger took control over her life so in 2005 she forgave Yolanda for choosing to stay with Matthew. Terry also expressed the fear she has of being pregnant because she is afflicted with PCOS and an incompetent cervix. Other challenges Terry expresses having is not allowing herself to be vulnerable with others. She describes herself as an independent person so asking for assistance can be especially difficult.
