A worldwide issue, that affects all societies, is the issue of mental health. Mental illness is a problem that discriminates against no one. Mental health issues continue to rise, as society and the medical field come to a better understanding of what problems indicate a mental illness. In the United States there has been an ebbing of stigma and a new understanding that mental issues need attention and treatment. With this understanding, several organizations have come forward to help deal with the effects of mental health issues. The two organizations I will discuss are Mental Health America (MHA) and the National Alliance on Mental Health Institute (NAMI). I will describe each organization and I will also analyze a couple of the ways each organization is addressing mental health, while incorporating sociological terms to explain their connection to society. Mental Health America was founded in 1909 and is the nation’s leading community-based non-profit dedicated to helping all Americans achieve wellness by living mentally healthier lives ("Mental Health Support - Mental Health Recovery and Advocacy," n.d.). MHA strives to endorse mental wellbeing as a vital part of overall health. Their organization includes prevention services, early diagnosis and intervention, and integrated care and treatment for those who need it, with recovery as the goal.
