Verhoeven describes qualitative research as having nothing to do with numbers and more to do with exploring the background of information. The qualitative research method will be used as a descriptive method of research that will employ data collection methods to pick out how military family members, especially spouses, perceive situational challenges. Their perceptions are what will give this type of research its holistic form (Verhoeven, 2011, pp. 135-136).
Research Design
The phenomenological research design will be used to gain insight and understanding about the perceptions that military families have. Phenomenological designs have been commonly used to examine human experiences which are also known as lived experiences, provided by the descriptions of research participants. The goal of using this research design is to find meanings for each participant as they are asked to describe their own experiences, in which they perceive them. The data drawn from each participant will then be formulated into themes or patterns.
