With the predominance of social media, how is it affecting our psyche and our mental health? It’s a strange concept to think about because as we progress more and more into the digital age, we become more connected in various ways. Our stoves, microwaves, refrigerators, washers, etc become connected to the internet and we can control them from anywhere, yet we can’t seem to get a handle on mental illness when we have the information about symptoms right at our fingertips yet it’s still a subject we don’t want to talk about. Learning to make friends is a major part of life and it requires the ability to take risks. This applies to making new friends and even maintaining old ones. When problems are faced, they have to have courage to face it big or small. Learning to cross these bridges are essential to their self-esteem and ability to censor what they say. When they have nothing but a five inch screen to communicate with those inhibitions don’t exist as much. They can say what they want with little fear of repercussions, if they don’t like the person they can block them, if they don’t like the message they can delete it and think it’s gone forever. This can cause the victim to be embarrassed or afraid of further bullying if they tell an adult. It can make the child passive and less confident in themselves which can be a hindrance on their academic success. With the world becoming more connected via Internet, kids have an easier way do bully others since they don’t understand that it is just as destructive online than it is in person because they can’t see the reaction as it happens. They can do it anonymously without fear of retribution. When things get to far however, it can cause severe damage on the victim mentally. In worse cases the victim will commit suicide if they feel that there is no escape for them. The best way to combat cyberbullying on social media platforms, parents have to take more time in their lives to understand themselves the platforms kids can communicate with each other. Talk to their children the effects of what they say can do to others even if the child believes they can’t be hurt that it’s all a joke. Parents also must come to terms that they are parent first and friend second. They have to be proactive in their child’s internet usage and when they see things get out of hand, be willing to pull the
