Kinesiologists Wei Guo, Biye Wang, Qin Zhu, and Jie Ren from the Shanghai University of Sport in China conducted a laboratory study where they investigated, using the scientific method of experimental research, whether or not listening to relaxing music helped with mental fatigue and maintained performance after a continuous performance task. The researchers did this by manipulating variables to determine causation. The manipulated variable was relaxing music, which they tested against mental fatigue. Their hypothesis before conducting the experiment was that “listening to relaxing music would result in a reduced subjective feeling of mental fatigue and reduce the negative effects of fatigue on cognitive motor performance”. They published their results in a research article titled, Effects of Relaxing Music on Mental Fatigue Induced by Continuous Performance Task: Behavioral and ERPs Evidence.

In this study the Visual Analogue Scale was used to assess the participants feelings of mental fatigue after each fatigue inducing phase in the experiment. After each phase, participants were told to rate their subjective feelings of mental fatigue from 0, the minimum, to 100,

The participants in this study had normal vision and audition. None of them were overweight, obese, or taking medications that affected the central nervous system. They had no current or past psychiatric or neurological illnesses, and for the sake of the tests were all right handed. Also, beforehand they were instructed to abstain from alcohol for twenty-four hours and from substances containing caffeine for twelve hours. The participants assigned to the music group performed the sixty minute fatigue inducing task while listening to relaxing music, while the control group performed the same task without
