What is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that requires treatment and medications.
Schizophrenia is common in ages 18-35. People confuse Schizophrenia with split-personality disorder which is not correct. People who suffer from Schizophrenia do not suffer from split personality disorder, but from not being able to distinguish reality to what is not realistic. They may see things or objects that are not physically there. People that suffer from this disorder hear voices talking to them, some might be good others are bad. People with this disorder have a hard trying to function or living if untreated or ignored. Symptoms may take months or even years to be seen. Symptoms are no pleasure in doing anything in their daily life. They may want to be alone and not with crowds or around too many people. They like to be isolated and left alone. There is a lack of energy and motivation to do anything. They are more emotionless and don’t care to be affectionate. They may also suffer from insomnia or not getting enough sleep.
The person itself or loved one may start realizing that the person is not depressed and may in fact have a mental disorder when they start hearing voices, they find themselves talking to themselves. They are so delusional that they do not know how to compare reality to not real. Voices talk to them and may tell them to do things some or even to kill and hurt others or themselves. An estimated 40 percent of this population go untreated per year. Nearly one third of people who have schizophrenia have attempted suicide. You can go to get treatment and or evaluated at a Psychiatrist/Hospital or at your Doctor’s office. There is no blood work that determines if you have this disorder; they will do test to determine if you indeed have this disorder. Treatments begins with medications. People can live with this disorder and get treated for it. Although, Schizophrenia has no cure, you can get medications to help you live a more real life. You can still be active and usually there are no limits to the things you can do that you used to
