Mental Disabilities In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Today is a world where if people see someone that has a mental disability, they are nice and try to help them out until they leave. Someone that was born disabled was the hunchback of notre dam. He was treated unfairly because of his disability like lennie.In the 1930’s people didnt know that there were people with disabilities, so they treated them like normal people and they couldn't fit in any where. Lennie had this problem everywhere he went so George and him had to keep traveling to gain the money where they could settle from everyone else.

In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men set in the 1930’s in Salinas Valley, California we meet the static character Lennie Smalls and his best friend George. While it’s shown that lennie is mentally disabled it is never stated,but it is shown like when he says ““Jus’wanted to feel that girl’s dress-jus’wanted to pet it like was a mouse”(Steinback 11).Since likes soft things and doesn't know it isn't right to touch a female's dress without permission.Lennie also has a dead mouse in his pocket. and when george finds out he says “What you want of a dead mouse, anyways”(Steinbeck 6) and george replies “I could pet it with my thumb while we walked along.”(Steinbeck 6).Petting a dead mouse tells that lennie isn't in the right mind.
