Lighting the menorah is a Jewish tradition that many people don’t know the origins to. Lighting the menorah first originated when the Greeks won an intense war against the Romans when the Romans were heavily favored to win. Afterwards, the Greeks lost to another nation and were forced to hold up the menorah in defeat. The Greeks lit the menorah without a lot of oil to try to give hope to the people. The candles on the menorah stayed lit for eight days long. This is why the current menorah has eight candles to represent the eight days that the menorah stayed lit. “It is a reminder of the sovereignty of the Temple,” as Rony Benoudiz once said.
