1. Menopause (SLO #1) Going into this class I knew very little about menopause; all I knew was that once you reach a certain age you were unable to have kids and you got hot flashes. In my family we have never really spoken of menopause due to it being a sensitive subject for most people to speak of or even admit they are going through. Since this class I have learned about Peri-Menopause, which is the time before Menopause where a woman’s estrogen levels begin to decrease. The Peri-Menopause leads to Menopause which is the permanent cessation of menstruation. I learned that the average age of women who go through Menopause is 51 but a woman can go through it as early as 30. I never knew that there was such a thing as Peri-Menopause so after some research it was interesting to find out that many women wait until they are already experiencing menopause symptoms before speaking to their doctors (Source A). I could not describe the symptoms of Menopause any better than by saying that most of the physical changes associated with menopause result from fluctuations in estrogen levels and include hot flashes, night sweats, difficulty sleeping, vaginal dryness or atrophy, incontinence, osteoporosis and heart disease (Source A).
