What is Meningitis? Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. When the meninges, the protective membrane around the brain and spinal cord, become infected is what causes meningitis. For a doctor to diagnose they need to draw a few different tests such as swabbing your nose and throat or rectum, taking some blood or drawing fluid from around your spinal cord. There is no specific treatment for viral meningitis. Antibiotics do not help viral infections but there is an antiviral medicine if you have contracted meningitis by the herpesvirus and influenza.
