Meningiomas are the most common type of tumor in the head region. They are mainly seen in adults over 60 years of age, more frequently in women than men. However, some meningiomas can contain abnormal cells which have the capacity to recur more frequently (anaplastic meningiomas) and other rare types of malignant (cancerous) tumors that are very aggressive, recur, and respond poorly to treatment. Research has indicated an abnormal chromosome and growth factors can prompt the occurrence of meningiomas. Known risk factors to developing meningiomas include a history of radiation exposure to the brain, breast cancer, and a diagnosis of a medical condition called neurofibromatosis type
